4300 Speedway wins a 2024 Preservation Austin Merit Award

“That used to be my post office” is a commonly-traded phrase over in Hyde Park these days.  Congratulations to our client and owner of 4300 Speedway, on receiving a 2024 Preservation Austin Merit Award for Rehabilitation for the project.  This annual awards program spotlights visionary approaches to preserving our city's unique heritage.

We were engaged to help transform the iconic 1960s post office into a new type of neighborhood hub after USPS terminated its lease. Our light-touch design strategy kept the footprint and exterior brick shell in tact, while dividing the structure into four independent tenant spaces with generous new apertures for each. An elegant exterior canopy and walkway was added along the length of the building, creating a shaded pedestrian-friendly buffer between the structure and parking lot.

A dynamic mix of locally owned businesses have since moved into the building. We were fortunate to partner with two of them, First Light Books and Moogie Pilates, on the design of their spaces as well. With construction almost complete across the project we are glad to see 4300 Speedway reaching its full potential. Big thanks to all who continue to visit and enjoy their ‘old post office’!

Visit Preservation Austin to learn more about all of this year’s winners and purchase tickets to join us on November 12 at Springdale Station for the awards celebration.
