This 12,000sf office building will be the new East Texas district headquarters for the Texas Forest Service. The brief of the building was to showcase southern yellow pine mass timber products, in alignment with the organization’s mission to support forest-based economic development in the state.
Glulam columns and beams, together with cross laminated timber roof panels, form a gable superstructure for the building. The building’s infrastructure was carefully orchestrated in order to keep the timber decks exposed. A low central spine of utility spaces allows room for a mechanical chase in the gable, while offices with natural daylight and taller ceilings line the building’s perimeter. The long hallways are enlivened with subtle shifts in width and plays of light and shadow. A training room at the main entry provides space for education and public events, alongside the administrative functions of the headquarters.
