Playhive / Austin, TX

The Playhive is an 8’ diameter, 6’ high structure designed to encourage play and gathering amongst kids (and adults!). 

Play—especially in the age-old tradition of fort-building—provides formative developmental experiences in exploring, discovering, socializing, and experimenting with the ability to effect change in the environment. The Playhive, made only using cedar 2x4s, is designed to encourage gathering within, peeking through, climbing up, circling around, and peering upwards as sunlight sifts throughout the structure, changing depending on the time of day and angle of view.

The stained cedar material of the fort blended into the landscape when seen from without. From within, it creates a heightened awareness of the tree canopy and the sky above.
