901 East Sixth / Austin, TX

901 East Sixth is a 125,000sf 5-story ‘core and shell’ office building on the eastside of Austin, two blocks from the interstate. As part of a wave of rapid densification along the city’s urban corridors, this development aimed to sit comfortably in its eclectic surroundings, with a design language inspired by the light-industrial neighborhood vernacular.

The building was the first in Texas to use Cross-Laminated-Timber (CLT) as part of a composite structural system. The steel columns and beams span 45’-0” from core to perimeter, allowing for large, flexible column-free floor plates. At the double-height lobby, a 25’ tall bi-fold door opens to the street, showcasing the ‘feature wall’ assembled from CLT waste off-cuts.  With generous 15’ floor-to-floor heights, operable windows, second-floor balconies overlooking the street, and a striking corten steel cladding, the LEED Gold-certified building created a unique offering in the Austin office space market.

In 2019, the Austin Chapter of the Urban Land Institute recognized the project with its 'Best Project Innovation' Impact Award.  The building also received an Honorable Mention in the The Architect's Newspaper Best of 2019 Design Awards, a Regional Excellence Award in the 2020 US Wood Design Awards and was published in the Nov/Dec 2018 issue of Texas Architect.
