Our long-time client had lived in his house in South Austin for over 10 years and decided he was there to stay. Many aspects of the house bothered him though. The oddly-proportioned screened porch conversion. The messy mix of craftsman details and siding types. The lack of storage. The poor connection to the backyard. He also wanted some more room and a better layout for entertaining. Instead of the living room being at the front of the house it’s now at the back, in place of the old screened porch, with a vaulted ceiling and a new bedroom adjacent to it, both looking onto the magnificent 48” heritage live oak. A contemporary interpretation of a ‘wainscoting’ winds through the house and even outside, transforming into a guardrail on the new covered porch. Throughout the house, a clean modern aesthetic is warmed up with accents of whitewashed wood, brass fixtures and a mix of custom-made and antique furniture.
