A couple, one a ceramicist, the other a computer programmer, desired a combined work/studio space in South Austin. The scheme takes advantage of the existing stepped landscape to create a variety of spaces and outdoor relationships in a compact footprint. The office can transform into a guest room/rental studio and faces toward the street for convenient third-party access. The studio has taller ceilings and a skylight for abundant natural light, with a large opening onto the yard to serve its dual purpose as a party space and access to a covered ‘kiln’ porch at the end of the building. A ‘dry’ workspace overlooking the studio allows computer and drawing tasks to be kept separate from the ‘wet’ ceramics process.
